Overview

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track teaching faculty position in Korean language, starting August 2024. This position will contribute to the growth and vibrancy of the Korean Language Program through engaging teaching and service activities. The successful candidate will teach Korean language courses across all levels and assist with new curriculum development. Service responsibilities may include training graduate teaching assistants, student placement in Korean language courses, and community outreach activities. Teaching faculty of all ranks are also expected to engage in regular professional development with support from the department.

Principal Duties:

1. Teaching:

  • Teach a minimum of two Korean language courses per semester, across all levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced).
  • Design and deliver proficiency-based courses aligned with the Korean Language Program, Professional Korean certificate program, and undergraduate Korean Major.
  • Develop and maintain syllabi, teaching materials (including potential adaptations), and assessments.
  • Hold regular office hours, advise students, and supervise graduate teaching assistants.

2. Proficiency Assessment:

  • Collaborate in coordinating Korean language proficiency assessments for program/major/certificate students.

3. Instructional Technology Integration:

  • Lead the vision and implementation of technology-enhanced curriculum and materials within the Korean Language Program.
  • Actively engage and contribute to the development process.

4. Leadership & Support:

  • Assume the role of Director for K-house in the International Learning Community.
  • Guide and mentor student tutors to provide effective Korean language tutoring.

Education:

Required

  • Master’s Degree
  • Degree and area of specialization: Korean language or linguistics, applied linguistics, language education, second language acquisition, or a related field.

Preferred

  • PhD
  • Degree and area of specialization: Korean language or linguistics, applied linguistics, language education, second language acquisition, or a related field.

Qualifications:

  • Native or near-native fluency in Korean and professional competency in spoken and written English required.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

  • At least one-year experience teaching Korean as a foreign or second language at the US college level required with three years’ experience preferred.
  • Experience in teaching all levels of Korean at the postsecondary level in the United States preferred.
  • Experience in teaching Heritage/Business/Conversation/Media Korean, technology-enhanced instructional design, assessment, curriculum development or Korean language program coordination desired.
  • ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) Tester training in Korean desired.
