Overview

History Instructors teach during the Upward Bound summer program’s intensive five-week educational experience offered to a select number of students. The program’s goal is to assist these students in achieving positive post-secondary outcomes through academic tutoring, test prep, and concentrated academic classes. Instructors are responsible for teaching during the five-week summer component. The goal of curriculum design is to be responsive to DeEd curriculum requirements for the coming academic year. The instructor prepares students in subject areas they may be enrolled in during the upcoming academic year, focusing on learning study skills to help students succeed in their classes.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in History
  • Teaching experience at the high school or college level
  • Ability to work with a diverse population of high school students with a student-centered and developmental approach

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s or advanced degree in History

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills
  • Establish rapport and empathize with students of low-income and first-generation students

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Develop curriculum according to Upward Bound program guidelines for assigned class
  • Proven ability to instruct and respond appropriately with a diverse population of students
  • Proven ability to collaborate with an assigned tutor counselor for positive student outcomes
  • Become familiar with and follow Upward Bound summer policies and procedures
  • Develop and administer pre and post-testing to students at the beginning and end of the summer program
  • Prepare and submit daily homework assignments, missing homework assignment sheets, and daily attendance sheets
  • Submit progress reports on each student’s performance weekly or as necessary
  • Provide any pertinent records or information regarding any student in your class(es)
  • Provide the necessary class coverage and lesson plans to the assistant director and tutor in the event of your absence
  • Possess a thorough understanding of the Upward Bound program’s overall goals and assist with a program of study that will promote success and generate confidence for students
