We are a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) with a 62% Latinx student population primarily residing in Gilroy, Hollister, and Morgan Hill. With our main campus nestled in the hills of Gilroy and a satellite campus in downtown Hollister soon to become a full-service center, we are committed to achieving educational equity for all students in our community. Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for this position is an equity-minded individual who understands the importance of building a History program that creates inspiration and opportunities for students who have been historically underserved, particularly in the Latinx community. Gavilan seeks candidates who view the elimination of inequities as an individual and collective responsibility and who strive to reframe inequities as a problem of practice. The ideal candidate demonstrates a commitment to student-centered teaching and coaching practices, effective cross-disciplinary and cross campus collaboration, transparent decision-making, and purposeful service to the community and embraces the role of an educator who is continually learning anti-racist pedagogy and adapting to the needs of a diverse student population.

DESIRABLE ATTRIBUTES

  • Experience developing community college curriculum.
  • Experience utilizing an equity framework to develop student-centered curriculum, assess student learning, and develop support programs to increase student retention and success.
  • Experience incorporating service learning or civic engagement, such as working with on and off campus communities and organizations to create exhibitions and events that showcase oral histories, highlight communities of color, and connect students to movements for positive change.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach Chicanx History and/or Chicanx Studies and US History courses that center the histories and experiences of people of color.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and utilize culturally relevant course content, anti-racist pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or are students who are historically underserved.

REQUIREMENTS

Educational and Professional Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Master’s in history OR
  • Bachelor’s in history AND Master’s in political science, humanities, geography, area studies, women’s studies, social science or ethnic studies
  • OR the equivalent

Essential Duties

The following duties are typical of those performed by employees in this job title; however, employees may perform other related duties, and not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each employee in the job title.

  • Teach 14-16 lecture equivalent hours per semester both in person and online; create learning environments to foster the growth and success of diverse students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies, and critical feedback on assignments and discussions.
  • Hold office hours and meet regularly with students (both in person and online).
  • Attend monthly department meetings and periodic division meetings.
  • Contribute to department and campus-wide student success initiatives.
  • Revise, update, and create curriculum to meet the needs of diverse students in all modalities.
  • Participate in campus shared governance.
  • Participate in ongoing professional learning, particularly around anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Adhere to department, division, and campus policies and procedures for faculty employees.
