Faculty: World Languages and Cultures (Spanish Education), Full-Time, Temporary

Overview:

Salem State University invites applications for a full-time, temporary faculty member specializing in
Spanish Education beginning September 1, 2027. This is a joint appointment between the World Languages and Cultures department and the
McKeown School of Education, and plays a central leadership role in the university's Spanish teacher licensure programs and carries
significant responsibility for teaching, program coordination, hiring of adjuncts, field placement, advising, and collaboration across
academic units and with state licensure offices.

The successful candidate will serve as the Lead Faculty member for Spanish teacher
licensure programs, including the 4+1 BA/MEd with Initial Licensure and the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Spanish, which offers
Elementary and Secondary tracks at both the Initial and Professional licensure levels. These programs are jointly supported by the World
Languages and Cultures department and the McKeown School of Education to ensure alignment with disciplinary standards, pedagogical best
practices, and evolving state licensure requirements.

Duties
and Responsibilities:

Candidates are required to perform duties in accordance with the MSCA contract. Duties include teaching, advising, scholarship and contributions to continuously
improve the department and university. The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. The position is subject to available
funding.

Programmatic Responsibilities
Teaching (or adjunct hiring) responsibilities will be distributed across
the two units and will focus primarily on licensure-related coursework, including but not limited to:

• Spanish Methods I and II
  courses with integrated, co-requisite field experiences
• Student teaching seminar and practicum
• Advanced-track courses such
  as Action Research and Clinical sequences
• Elementary and intermediate Spanish teaching
• Oversight and coordination of field
  placements, practica, and student teaching
• Ongoing collaboration with the Licensure Office
• Supervising practitioners, and
  school partners across PK-12 districts
• Engage in service activities in both the Department of World Languages and Cultures and the
  McKeown School of Education
• Collaborate across disciplines to align licensure curricula, assessment practices, and clinical
  expectations
• Participate actively in state, regional, and national professional organizations related to world language
  education
• Contribute to professional advocacy efforts supporting world language education, teacher preparation, and student access
  (e.g., Seal of Biliteracy initiatives, HSI, state frameworks)

Depending on the student enrollment trends and the department needs,
it is possible, but not guaranteed, to renew the temporary full time position in the future academic years.

Required
Qualifications:

1. PhD or EdD in Spanish, World Language Education, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related
   field
2. Superior proficiency in Spanish
3. Possession of or eligibility for Spanish teacher licensure at the PK-12 level


4. Demonstrated expertise in proficiency-based language instruction and assessment
5. Experience teaching, mentoring, and/or
   supervising pre-service teachers
6. Experience and ability to coordinate clinical experiences and work effectively with PK-12
   partners

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Experience working in jointly administered teacher
   licensure programs
2. Familiarity with Massachusetts DESE licensure requirements
3. Record of professional engagement,
   scholarship, or advocacy in world language education
4. Experience with accreditation, clinical partnerships, or program-level
   assessment
5. Strong advising and collaborative skills appropriate to a joint appointment
6. Demonstrated commitment to equity,
   access, and community-engaged teacher preparation

Location:

This is an on-site, position in Salem, MA with on-campus, in-person responsibilities.
