The Wilkins Fellows program is named after Professor Emeritus Heanon Wilkins, Miami University’s first full-time African-American faculty member. A distinguished professor of Spanish, Portuguese, and Black World Studies, Professor Wilkins received Miami’s highest honors in teaching, research, and service, and we honor him with the Wilkins Fellows program. The Wilkins Fellows program is designed to provide those with a strong interest in pursuing a career as a faculty member with dedicated mentoring and the opportunity to explore higher education as a career. Wilkins Fellows teach and research alongside a faculty with a commitment to teaching that gives Miami its #1 ranking among public colleges in the nation according to a special list by U.S. News and World Reports.

The Fellowship provides a faculty salary and a $4000 stipend for research related expenses. This is an outstanding opportunity to live and work in an inclusive community of enthusiastic scholars in the Miami department aligned with specific credentials.

Duties/Physical Demands:The Fellowship is for one full academic year (9 month faculty appointment) with possible reappointment for a second year. Wilkins Fellows receive a one course load reduction each semester in order to foster a vibrant research program. Potential for tenure track appointment following fellowship.

Minimum Qualifications:Miami University welcomes candidates who have nearly completed (e.g. ABD) or completed their doctorate or equivalent degree within four years of the August 2017 appointment date. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen, a lawful permanent resident, admitted for residence as an applicant under the 1986 immigration amnesty law, refugee or asylee.

Preferred Qualifications:Desirable qualifications include the ability to contribute in significant ways to Miami’s diversity-related initiatives.
