The College of Arts & Sciences invites applications for a tenured associate professor of African American history, beginning in the Fall of 2019. The successful candidate must be a specialist in African American history, preferably with a concentration in the twentieth century; secondary field in African history  is desirable.  She/he will teach courses that are cross-listed in  Black Studies: Africa and the Diaspora  that include the African American History survey, 1865-present; a seminar on the Long Black Freedom Struggle, and other courses in African American history and Black Studies.  As one of the leaders of Fairfield’s interdisciplinary Black Studies Program, the candidate will participate in the teaching of the foundational Black Lives Matter course.  Strong scholarly accomplishment and excellent teaching ability and experience required.  Successful candidates will have the opportunity to teach in the American Studies M.A. program and to receive grants from the Humanities Institute.  Fairfield’s new expanded core curriculum program includes a signature element on Social Justice for which courses in African-American history and Black Studies are central.
