Overview

The University of Massachusetts Lowell is seeking a dynamic and experienced scholar to serve as Graduate Program Director in the School of Criminology and Justice Studies (SCJS). Candidates for this position must meet University standards for a tenured appointment at the rank of Full Professor. Senior level faculty – both Associate and Full Professors with a proven track record of securing external research funding and with previous administrative experience as graduate directors (Master’s or PhD) are encouraged to apply. The start date for the position is September 2018.

The School of Criminology and Justice Studies (SCJS) is housed within the University’s College of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (FAHSS). The College is the largest unit of the University, with 11 academic departments and over 180 full time faculty. FAHSS has experienced significant growth in recent years, including the hiring over 50 new faculty members, achieving a 70% growth in funded research expenditures, and the addition of several new interdisciplinary graduate programs.

SCJS currently has 23 full time faculty members, including 17 tenure track, 1 lecturer, and 5 visiting positions, with additional faculty joining the School in Fall 2018. Faculty members specialize in a wide range of scholarly topic areas, including victimology, policing, institutional and community corrections, biosocial criminology, organized crime, terrorism, violence, the classification, treatment and control of sex offenders, criminal justice technology, and a full range of global justice issues. Faculty members have expertise in quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research, with a high level of scholarly output. Externally funded research by SCJS faculty is currently supported by several million dollars in grants from major funding agencies. The School’s faculty collaborate and partner with local, state, and federal criminal justice agencies, while also working in partnership with faculty and organizations globally. Additionally, SCJS is home to four high profile academic journals: Crime & Delinquency, Victims & Offenders, Democracy & Security, and Perspectives on Terrorism.

SCJS enrolls over 140 master’s students in Criminal Justice/Criminology and approximately 40 doctoral students. The School offers a master’s degree, four certificate programs, and a doctoral program with two concentrations: criminology/criminal justice, and terrorism/security studies. The School also offers two master’s degrees and a certificate program in security studies.

The new Graduate Program Director will be responsible for the overall coordination of all graduate program activities, and for the day-to-day management of the PhD program; the day-to-day management of our master’s programs in criminal justice and security studies will be responsibility of the Criminal Justice Master’s Program Coordinator and the Director of our Security Studies program. While serving as Graduate Program Director, s/he will be expected to work collaboratively with the Chair of the School of Criminology and Justice Studies, the Director of the security studies’ program and the Coordinator of our Master’s program in criminal justice on issues related to the design and management of all our graduate programs.

As Graduate Program Director, the successful candidate will assume responsibility for:

1) Leading the School’s strategic efforts to expand the quality and national profile of its graduate programs;

2) Leading recruitment efforts for graduate applicants, including those from under-represented racial/ethnic groups;

3) Overseeing efforts and initiatives to promote the success of students enrolled in the School’s graduate programs;

4) Leading the implementation of the graduate curriculum, and chairing the School’s graduate committee;

5) Working with the School’s chairperson to coordinate the schedule of graduate classes; and

6) Ensuring that the graduate programs maintains their relevance and responsiveness to the demands of the field, through ongoing engagement with the broader academic discipline.

The successful candidate will have a solid record of research and scholarship commensurate with the rank of Full Professor at UMass Lowell. S/he will offer evidence of strong interpersonal and leadership skills; sound judgment; managerial competence; and a clearly-articulated strategic vision for both masters and doctoral programs, including the mentorship of graduate/doctoral students.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Ph.D. in a social science field, including criminology/criminal justice, sociology, psychology, political science, economics, and public policy, with a clear emphasis on criminal justice related topics
  • Current rank of Associate or Full Professor
  • Experience teaching in a doctoral program in criminal justice or related field
  • Experience procuring and leading major grant-funded research projects
  • Consistent record of high-quality scholarly output commensurate with the rank of Full Professor at UMass Lowell

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as Graduate Director (Master’s or PhD), Associate Chair, Chair, or other formal leadership role within an academic unit with a doctoral program
  • Leadership experience within an academic unit in the field of criminology, criminal justice, or a related field
  • Experience working collaboratively with criminal justice agencies
  • Experience with student success initiatives and strategic planning
