The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at The University of Iowa invites applications from candidates with specializations in Spanish applied linguistics or second language acquisition, broadly defined, for the position of Director of Spanish Language Instruction at the rank of Lecturer. This is a full-time, renewable, non-tenure-track position to begin July 1, 2018. The initial appointment will be for one year, with a possible re-appointment of up to two additional years, and the position will be renewable thereafter in three-year increments, pending collegiate approval and demonstrated excellence in teaching and program development. Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience.
The successful candidate will direct and manage the elementary and intermediate Spanish program in collaboration with a team of administrative and instructional staff.
- PhD in second language acquisition/applied linguistics or second/foreign language education with a research and teaching focus in Spanish or in Hispanic linguistics [degree in hand by August 2018]
- demonstrated excellence in teaching Spanish language to native speakers of English at the university level in the United States
- some supervisory experience
- native or near-native proficiency in English and Spanish
- direct experience in computer-assisted language teaching
- demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with diverse faculty, staff, and students
Desirable qualifications: familiarity with:
- hybrid/blended course development and management
- Languages for Specific Purposes
- instruction of heritage speakers
- experiential learning.
Responsibilities of the Director include:
- Develop curriculum and prepare course syllabi and assessments in accordance with the goals of the department and the GE Core world languages learning outcomes
- Supervise the program assistant’s work (recordkeeping, responding to students’ queries, administration of assessments, mounting and maintenance of course materials, etc.)
- Evaluate and select instructional materials
- Advise the chair in hiring Spanish language instructors
- Provide initial and ongoing training of graduate student instructors, including a multiple-day orientation before each Fall semester
- Engage with faculty and graduate students on advances in Spanish language teaching
- Teach (1/2 load) Spanish language courses, the Teaching and Learning Languages graduate course for new graduate instructors, and other courses according to specialization and department needs
- Actively participate in professional development through conference/workshop attendance and other professional activities
In conjunction with a team of lecturers, other administrative duties include:
- Supervision of language instructors (between 20-30), including regular performance observations and evaluations
- TA staffing assignments within the lower division
- Coordinate third-year multi-section writing and speaking courses
- Involvement in departmental committees relevant to general education
