The Department of History at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse seeks applicants for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor rank in World History and the History of Science, Science and Technology Studies (STS), and/or the History of Medicine, beginning Fall 2019. Candidates for the appointment should have, or be near to completing, a doctoral degree in history or a related field by the start date. Degree must be earned by the first personnel review, no later than May 15, 2020. Period and geographic region of specialization are open, although preference will be given to applicants who can enhance departmental course offerings and contribute to curricular changes and programs that reflect our institutional mission. Areas of expertise might include the history of science or of technology, history of life or natural sciences, or history of medicine, although candidates may combine any of these in their research and teaching. This position entails the unique opportunity to collaborate across campus with programs outside history and faculty in various disciplines. A successful candidate will teach 12 credits (typically 4 courses) per semester — the majority consisting of undergraduate World History and General Education courses — combined with advanced undergraduate courses in their area of specialty.
- Ph.D. in History, or in a related field with a history emphasis. Degree must be earned by the first personnel review, no later than May 15, 2020.
- Coursework in and evidence of ability to teach courses on History of Science or STS, History of Medicine, or related fields.
- Evidence of ability to teach World History general education courses.
- Evidence of ability to teach courses in historiography and historical methods, as well as historical research and writing.
- Evidence of ability to start an active program of research.
- Research specialization/experience in History of Science or STS, History of Medicine, or related fields.
- Evidence of ability to enhance departmental course offerings and contribute to curricular changes and programs that reflect our institutional mission.
- Evidence of ability to recruit, retain, and facilitate graduation of students from under-represented backgrounds.
- Evidence of ability to research and teach about history in a global context.
- Desire and experience to incorporate students in research activities.
