Kankakee Community College is nestled on the banks of the Kankakee River, 60 miles south of Chicago. The College serves approximately 4,000 credit students each semester and is dedicated to the mission of enhancing quality of life through learning. Though KCC is located in a growing tri-city metropolitan area, the college serves a largely rural district. The college boasts a 177-acre beautifully landscaped, tree-filled campus with more than 50 acres of buildings, parking, roads and athletic fields as well as 125 acres of open area and farmland.
Primary Function -
Responsible for supervision of faculty and staff and coordination of the activities of the Humanities and Social Sciences Division. Responsible for the organization, administration and general effectiveness of the liberal arts courses.
Essential Responsibilities -
A. Supervises the promotion, organization, coordination, and evaluation of the courses and curricula of the division; assists in course and curriculum development.
B. Assists the Dean of Instruction in the recruitment and selection of personnel for full time instructional positions within the division.
C. Interviews prospects and makes recommendations to the Dean of Instruction regarding part time instructors; supplies part time instructors with course materials, objectives, and textbooks needed for their classes.
D. Recommends to the Dean of Instruction a division schedule of classes and instructor assignments.
E. Supervises and evaluates personnel in the division, including both full and part time instructors. Recommends discipline/discharge of staff exhibiting unsatisfactory performance; recommends salary increases for staff in the division.
F. Coordinates the selection of textbooks and recommends their approval to the Dean of Instruction.
G. Collaborates with faculty to evaluate current division curriculum and recommends changes to improve course offerings.
H. Collects and, when necessary, assigns and/or directs the course assessment projects for the division, reports to the Assessment Committee the course assessment results and helps to organize the assessment of the general education outcomes.
I. Uses research on student enrollment, retention, and success to create positive change for the division.
J. Develops and submits an annual budget request for the operation of the division; approves division expenditures within the Board adopted budget.
K. Plans for and requisitions equipment, supplies, and material for instructional purposes within the division.
L. Is responsible for the control, maintenance, and inventory of equipment of the division.
M. Schedules and conducts regular meetings of the division's instructional personnel.
N. Advises the Dean of Instruction regarding the professional in service training needs of the instructional staff.
O. Prepares and submits annual evaluation reports of division accomplishments and concerns, making recommendations where appropriate; submits other reports as requested.
P. Participates as a member of the Curriculum and Academic Standards Committee and the Instructional Program Administrators.
Q. Coordinates the College Risk Management Program in a capacity appropriate to this position. This includes, but is not limited to, monitoring conditions, events, and circumstances present through daily operations in the College operation and communicating observations to the appropriate supervisor and/or Vice President of Business Affairs and Human Resources or his/her designee or taking necessary actions to prevent or reduce such occurrences if applicable.
Other Responsibilities -
A. Coordinates the preparation of catalog materials for the division.
B. Maintains current files of course materials.
C. Consults with and advises the Learning Resources Center Director regarding desired books, periodicals, and audio visual supplies.
D. Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Dean of Instruction.
E. Responds to the functions of the position in an environmental setting which might include cold, heat, odor, dampness, dirt, fumes, dust, oil, grease, noise, or vibration on a frequent basis. Appropriate protective devices are available as required.
Educational and Experiential Requirements -
A. Master's degree in a related teaching discipline required. (English, Speech, History, Humanities, Sociology, Philosophy, Political Science, or the Fine Arts). Post-graduate work beyond master's and/or experience providing potential of a broad perspective desirable.
B. Demonstrated history of a student-centered approach to teaching and learning, as well as a commitment to making the humanities and social sciences meaningful to all students preferred.
C. Expertise in teaching writing, supervisory experience, and administrative experience desirable.
D. Qualified candidate must have excellent reading, writing, and computation skills as well as computer literacy or willingness to learn.
