The Department of Hispanic Studies at the College of Charleston presently invites applications for the position of Chair/Associate Professor or Professor of Spanish beginning July 1, 2010.

Ph.D. in Spanish (specialization open), native or near native proficiency in Spanish and English, excellent oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, substantial prior administrative experience preferably as chair of a mid-size department, documented evidence of scholarship at the level of Associate Professor or Professor, demonstrated excellence in language instruction, familiarity with current teaching/learning approaches, and experience in curriculum and faculty development required.

We seek an enthusiastic teacher-scholar-administrator who has a passion for undergraduate education, who is able to provide leadership and vision to a dynamic department of over 40 members (including 18 tenured and tenure-track faculty) and who has an interest in interdisciplinary connections. Primary duties include scheduling and overseeing the department’s many programs and collaborations –both at the major and the minor level (e.g., Spanish and Linguistics)—as well as at the Master’s level (see below). Additional duties include strategic planning, program assessment, budget preparation/oversight, assisting junior faculty, and fostering faculty research. Position includes a 1/1 teaching load.

Founded in 1770, the College of Charleston is the thirteenth oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. The Department of Hispanic Studies forms part of the School of Languages, Cultures and World Affairs, and offers one of the largest and most comprehensive Spanish programs in the Southeast. It serves nearly 6,000 students annually, including 120 majors and 282 minors. It also houses a program in Portuguese, an interdisciplinary Linguistics minor and an M.A. in Bilingual Interpreting. In addition, the Department of Hispanic Studies collaborates closely with the M.Ed. in Languages and Language Education, the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program, as well as with numerous study abroad programs.
